DESCRIPTION
Special Focus January 2025:
BRINGING MORE OF THE GOOD, THE TRUE, & THE BEAUTIFUL INTO THE LIVES OF YOUR TEENS
Parents are the primary educators of their children, whether they homeschool or not. For this reason, we wish we could leave an apple on the desk of every parent. We know how much goes into the work of educating, especially at the high school level. If you're not doing the tutoring yourself, you're finding the tutor. If you're not choosing the curriculum, you're selecting the school Whether you sit down at the kitchen table and teach your kids every day, supervise "school at home" from a loving distance, or just wish to supplement your child's formal schooling with something awesome, we have something for you.
Think of this as your "teachers lounge." We've spent decades combined teaching in classrooms, advising in schools, tutoring, homeschooling our own kids, and becoming entrepreneurs. Let's talk, teacher-to-teacher. We are so excited to meet you, to share what we know, and to answer your questions, in hopes of making your lives easier and your role as teachers even more fruitful, more fulfilling, and maybe even more fun!
Join us for 8 talks followed by live Q&A with the 6 presenters!

Science is an ascendent practice—a process of discovery driven by curiosity, collaboration, and shared understanding. Like the founding of America, it thrives on openness and the belief that knowledge belongs to everyone. This talk explores the democratic nature of science, its connection to Enlightenment ideals, and its power to inspire. By revisiting the roots of scientific discovery, we’ll uncover how replicating history’s great experiments reveals the beauty of science and makes it accessible to all. There’s nothing magical about this approach—it’s simply how science works and how it should be taught.

Michael P. Finnegan (Ph.D.)
Present for live Q&A on Jan. 3!
In his first year teaching middle school science in Oakland, California, Michael noticed that his students had as much potential as his doctoral engineering peers at UC Berkeley, but the students' days were filled with worksheets, lectures, and digital drills—a way of learning that was disconnected, boring, and devoid of curiosity. Because his principal was resistant to off-script attempts, he decided to innovate outside of the traditional system. He studied the journeys of the greatest scientists. Their curiosity was sparked by exposure to mysterious phenomena and encouragement to explore. That’s it: exposure and encouragement! In 2012, he designed a summer camp where students mirrored the journey that led to quantum physics. They ran 1800s experiments and concluded: electrons leap in quirky bursts. They’d discovered quantum physics—on their own. That moment was the start of QuantumCamp, now QuantumCourses, of which Michael is Founder and CEO.

An Apple for the Teacher
An apple for the teacher is
a custom tried and true,
a way of saying “thanks” for all
the good things teachers do.
This symbol is significant,
for apples grow from seeds––
like those our teachers plant in
children’s minds, to meet their needs.
These precious seeds, sowed kindly by
a teacher’s loving hand,
spring forth in trees of knowledge that
spread out across the land.
The vital fruit of these great trees
is picked and freely shared,
each taste a promise to the world
of rich, new ground prepared.
And so the cycle goes, from seed
to sprout, to bearing tree.
We’re grateful for the hands that sow
our children’s destiny.
